“It’s a Cruel, Cruel Summer” // June Favorites

It took everything in my mind, body, and soul to get this blog post out today.

There’s been so much going on in my personal/family life, learning a new job, and also still dealing with creative (writer’s) block, and chronic fatigue.

Thanks for bearing with me! In between working, I’ve been making space for as much rest as possible. The goal is to get inspired to create more blog content.

With all that being said, summer officially kicked off on Sunday June 20th, 2021, and it feels like the gates of hell has opened in Baltimore. The temperatures earlier this week were unbearably hot. I was so thankful for the rain shower we’re getting now.

But in good news, at least the cicadas are gone. Won’t he do it?!

Let’s get into my monthly favorites for June 2021:

Entertainment

So, ‘Good Girls’ got canceled and I’m not too sad about it. Honestly, the show was becoming redundant and I didn’t even finish the latest season yet. I think everyone was watching just to see Rio anyway.

However, I am upset that NBC nor Netflix have decided to pick up and continue ‘Manifest’.

I wonder why Netflix keeps cancelling shows outta nowhere, and it always seems to be the ones that are actually really good.

For the month of June, I’ve only started watching one new show which was- ‘Panic’ on Amazon Prime. The other four shows are continuations and restarts. If you have any good show recommendations, leave them below in the comments!

T.V. Shows.

  1. Panic (Season One, Amazon Prime). Although this is a young adult/teen drama series, it was pretty good to watch. It’s kind of like hunger games meets “real life”.
  2. Black Summer (Season Two, Netflix). Season two literally started off with a bang and had so much action that left me very confused, which caused me to have to start all over from season one to remember what the hell was going on.
  3. Lupin (Part Two, Netflix). Part two of Lupin also started off with a bang and gave me heart palpitations all the way through, especially the end of episode one, season two, whew.
  4. Motherland: Fort Salem (Season Two, Hulu). I love, love this show so much. A cast full of great actresses, the concept and production of this show is impressive. I really don’t know how else to describe this show, you would have to see it for yourself.
  5. Manifest (Season Two, Netflix). I originally started watching this show way before it got popular and started airing on Netflix, but I fell off after season one, so I’ve been binge-watching it all over from the beginning. I’m sad to see it go.

Movies.

First, let’s talk about ‘The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do it”. I had somewhat high expectations for this movie but it left me feeling very UNDER-whelmed once it was over. I know it was supposed to be based on true events but it bored me. It wasn’t scary at all, it was no where near as good as the first. I could’ve done without a part three.

Actually, A lot of movies need to stop after part two. There’s no reason why we should be on ‘Fast & Furious 9’ right now.

Upcoming and new movies I want to see:

  • A Quiet Place II.
  • Spiral.
  • Zola.
  • Escape Room 2.
  • The Forever Purge.
  • The Suicide Squad.
  • Respect.
  • Candyman.

See all movie trailers and synopsis here on Movie Web.

  1. Awake (Netflix). “After a global event wipes out humanity’s ability to sleep, a troubled ex-soldier fights to save her family as society and her mind spiral into chaos.” I feel like I’ve seen a couple movies with the same concept where the people can’t fall asleep. If I was in a horror movie like this, I know I wouldn’t make it cause I’m always sleepy.

Music.

Doja Cat and Tyler The Creator did the damn thing with their new albums. Both releasing on the last Friday of the month. What a perfect way to end the month. My replay button is sick of me. Both artist are in a lane of their own. Their performances and music videos are always so unique and entertaining. They’ve continuously proved how talented they are, genre-bending, and non-conforming. Not to mention they actually write their music.

Plus Doja Cat is a Libra like me 🙂

Other albums I enjoyed:

H.E.RBack of My Mind.

•ZiloWhere The Flowers Grow.

•Greentea PengMan Made.

•Emotional OrangesThe Juicebox.

•Children of ZeusBalance.

There’s also a new EP from Kwaku Asante out called: “Ode”, it’s short and sweet- both literally and figuratively. He’s pretty underrated.

My newly discovered artist picks for June:

• Topaz Jones, Ojerime, and Foushee.

I’m feeling Topaz Jones right now, I don’t know why I never came across him before. His latest album: “Don’t Go Tellin’ Yo Momma” that came out back in April 2021, is a dope feel-good album.

I liked the artist features on the album- Leven Kali and Phonte to name a few. The 28-year old New Jersey native brings an original flavor to the hip-hop/rap genre. Kind of reminds me of Childish Gambino. My top favorite song on the album is: Black Tame.

Topaz Jones- Hypebeast.

Podcast Episodes.

Books.

I’m still slowly reading ‘The Vanishing Half’. I love the way you can get so lost and wrapped up in a good book. It’s like watching a movie in your head, a great escape from the real world. Keep up with what I’m currently reading on my GoodReads profile listed on my blog homepage.

Beauty

//Olay Cleansing & Renewing Nighttime Body Wash with Retinol, Target- $7.99.

This body wash smells great. It renews and replenishes the skin overnight. It’s supercharged with Retinol (anti-aging) and vitamin B3 complex. Perfect for oily and combination skin so it suits my skins needs. The only downside is the scented fragrance that’s in it, so I don’t use it very much.

My main three body wash products that I keep in rotation are: Dove- Deep Moisture, Dr. Bronner’s- Baby Unscented, and Neutrogena- Body Clear.

Fashion

//Biker Shorts.

It’s the comfort and easy styling for me. I like pairing my biker shorts with oversized tees and sneakers or slides- my go-to outfit honestly. Plus of course they make the booty look even better.

Food

//A Sweet Tooth for Sweet Frogs.

I haven’t been to Sweet Frogs in a long time, I was craving something sweet and this was the perfect fix.

My order: a swirl of vanilla frozen yogurt, a swirl of strawberry fro-yo, a swirl of salted caramel fro-yo, topped with strawberries, almonds, chocolate chips, sprinkles, and a drizzle of honey.

//Aldi’s Frozen Mussels.

Listen, if you really know me you’ll know how much I love Black Mussels. I was very surprised to find frozen mussels in my local Aldi grocery store. I was even more surprised to find out they actually taste good. Of course you’ll have to steam them but you can add your own seasonings, sauce, and/or pasta.

Life Updates

//Effective July 1st, 2021..

The state of emergency in Maryland has been lifted by our governor. That means face masks will not be required inside any setting, including schools. However, places like hospitals, medical facilities, airplanes, and public transit are still required.

Business owners have the right to enforce their own mask policies if they want to. People who are not vaccinated are still encouraged to wear their mask (although I know they won’t). Let’s see how this goes cause I’m still on the fence.

//Father’s Day & Dads Birthday.

The end of June is usually always pretty busy and festive for me. Three days after celebrating Fathers Day, I have the honor of celebrating my dads birthday on June 23rd. So he gets double the amounts of gifts around this time. This year he turned 71 and doesn’t look a day over 40.

I’m forever blessed & grateful for having my dad in my life.

#BlackFathersMatter !

My parents and I.

Also, my stepdad celebrated his birthday on June 28th. Too much Cancer ♋️ energy going on haha.

My mom, me, and my stepdad.
My grandfather and I.

//Cancer Season & heightened emotions.

Cancer season began on June 21st and the Mercury Retrograde also ended on the 21st, bringing to the surface all the emotions that went unexpressed over the past couple weeks.

On top of that, the full moon in Capricorn happened that same week on June 24th. I was a crying mess that whole week but it felt good to release.

That’s all for now!

love always,

Every since I was in Elementary school, I always kept a diary. I guess you can say, as soon as I learned how to spell and form sentences- I never stopped. Writing is a true passion for me and the cheapest form of therapy. This blog was created as my digital diary and the only one I’m willing to share with the world.
