My Top Favorite Fashion Icons

If you could raid any celebrities closet who would it be? That’s one of the questions I had in mind when writing today’s post.

No, I’m not a fashion blogger. I don’t care about wearing the most expensive or designer clothing brands, nor do I care to follow all the latest fashion trends. I actually hate shopping for clothes.

I’d rather just be in the nude or walk around in an oversized tee. Unfortunately, that wouldn’t be acceptable so I’m forced to wear clothing.

Fashion should be expressive, inexpensive, and comfortable- BIG on the comfort part. Although I desire fashion to always be carefree and fun, sometimes it’s really not. Fashion controls me in ways I never knew till recently. If I don’t look ‘put together’ in my outfit, I’m not going out.

Cause when you look good, you feel good, and my mood sometimes depends on my outfit.

What you wear is going to show up in rooms before your personality does. First impressions DO matter.

I know we’ve all had those mental breakdowns when we’re looking for something to wear for an event and it’s like nothing you put on looks good. It’s thee worst feeling. Or is it just our insecurities and body dysmorphia talkin’?

My Fashion Icons

Rihanna

Also known as Robyn Rihanna Fenty. She is an actress, singer, fashion designer, and multi-business owner (Savage X Fenty and Fenty Beauty) from Barbados. She’s a 10x grammy winner, Billboard music award winner, and MTV video music award winner. You are living under a rock if you don’t know who Rihanna is. I’ve been a fan since the day she came out on the scene, and I’m still holding out hope that she’ll bless us with a new album soon.

What I like about Rihanna’s style is that she does her own thing and it just works. Who else would think to wear a silk mini dress with a big fur coat, high heels, and a baseball cap? So iconic! I also love when she models her own lingerie. Her Caribbean bad gyal demeanor shines through in her fashion. She’s beautiful and stylish. She could wear a shower curtain and make it look good.

Tracee Ellis Ross

The second oldest child of Diana Ross. Her real name is Tracee Joy Silberstein. Tracee is an actress, business owner of her own hair care line- Pattern Beauty, television host, producer, and director. She’s also a comedian in my opinion cause she’s so funny. I love following her on Instagram. She’s well known for her roles in the television series: Girlfriends and Black-ish.

Tracee’s style gives business-corporate wear to a T. Very professional and chic with pops of color. Her style can translate from the office, to the PTA meeting, to the airport, and to a bougie night out for dinner with the girls. I love a versatile well-put together fit.

She also serves serious body goals! Like, how does she look this good in a bikini?!

Kali Uchis

Kali Uchis, whose real name is Karly-Marina Loaiza is a Colombian-American singer-songwriter. She has a creative interest in visual arts, writing lyrics, and composing music. Although no formal vocal training, she is a natural talent that also plays saxophone and piano. Kali grew in popularity in 2015 with her debut EP- Por Vida, but I fell in love with her in 2018 when she released Isolation. She’s currently a 1x grammy award winner for her collaboration with Kaytranada on the song 10%.

Kali’s style reminds me of an early 2000s video vixen and the wife of a rich Colombian drug lord. Lots of denim on denim, sparkles, and fancy accessories. Her style oozes sex appeal, luxury, and femininity. Is her style too much or are you not doing enough?

Erykah Badu

The Queen of Neo-soul, her real name is Erica Abi Wright. Erykah Badu is a singer-songwriter, producer, and actress who’s influenced by 70s soul music, R&B, and 80s hip-hop. She has so many hit songs I honestly lost count. A 4x Grammy award winner, 2x MTV video music award winner, and a 2x BET award winner. She’s been making politically aware and emotionally powerful music since her 1997 debut.

Big hair, big hats, big turbans, everything Erykah wears is big and exaggerated, and I love it. Her style demands attention. Very Afro-eccentric and conscious. Fashion should make a statement and she understood the assignment. And she doesn’t have to wear skin tight and revealing clothing to do it.

Zoe Kravitz

The daughter of rock star/actor Lenny Kravitz and actress Lisa Bonet. Her full name is Zoe Isabella Kravitz. She quickly took after her parents and became an actress, singer, and model. Making a name for herself, she made her acting debut back in 2007. No award wins for her just yet but I enjoyed her roles in Dope, Yelling to the Sky, and High Fidelity.

I loved Zoe’s entire wardrobe on the High Fidelity TV series. It was very down to earth and effortless. There’s something about the bohemian hippie free-spirited style that gets me. The skinny box braids are icing to the cake and adds as a great accessory to her outfits whether she wears them in a high bun or long and flowy. Pairing combat booties with a silk or satin dress? *chefs kiss*.

Sade

The timeless beauty. Her real name is Helen Folasade Adu. Sade is Nigerian-born British singer, songwriter, and actress (although I’ve never seen her in any movie). She is a big influence on many contemporary and R&B singers, and is often mentioned as the apple of many hip-hop stars eyes such as J. Cole and Drake. She first came out in the early 1980s, she’s a 4x grammy winner, Brit award winner, and American music award winner. Her music is truly timeless.

‘Modest’ and ‘elegant’ are the words I think of when I see pictures of Sade. The only skin she show in her clothing is either a toned waistline or her sculpted back in a backless top. The ‘red lip with a white button up, jeans, and hair pulled back into a low ponytail’ combo is everything. The way you never see her anywhere in America is how incognito and out of the loop I inspire to be. No recent pictures or anything but I’m sure she’s still gracefully beautiful.

Saweetie

And last but not least- the icy girl herself, the hip-hop fashionista of the 2010s. Her real name is: Diamonte Quiava Valentin Harper. Saweetie is a rapper, singer, and songwriter that first came on the scene in 2018 (quote me if I’m wrong) with her first single- Icy Girl. And if I’m being honest, I love her fashion sense way more than her music. I think she’s a very intelligent girl, she has the brains and the beauty, and I hope to see her venture out into other artistic things other than rapping.

Saweetie always looks glamorous and very on-trend. She kills the street wear styles. Her casual styles are probably my favorite though- an oversized graphic top or hoodie, biker shorts, stylish sneakers, and a nice handbag. Her face stays beat to the Gods and she’s bringing back the year 2k tracksuits as well.

Who are your favorite fashion icons? what does fashion mean to you? And how would you describe your style? I’d love to know.

Every since I was in Elementary school, I always kept a diary. I guess you can say, as soon as I learned how to spell and form sentences- I never stopped. Writing is a true passion for me and the cheapest form of therapy. This blog was created as my digital diary and the only one I’m willing to share with the world.
